Written by Valerie

Flowhub Intelligence includes a built-in data dictionary that explains how every metric is defined and calculated. In this article, we'll guide you through using the data dictionary so your team can understand exactly what the numbers in your dashboards and reports represent.

The data dictionary is like the glossary at the back of a textbook. If you have ever wondered exactly how a metric is calculated or what an increase in a particular number actually means for your business, this is where you go.

Watch the video below to learn more about the data dictionary.

Navigate to the Data Dictionary

  1. Navigate to the Intelligence tab in the left navigation.

  2. Select Reports.

  3. Select Data Dictionary (located within the Intelligence section).

The data dictionary displays a list of all available metrics and data points.

Look Up a Metric

  1. Browse or search the list of available metrics.

  2. Select a Metric to view its details.

Each metric entry includes:

  • Definition: A plain-language explanation of what the data point measures.

  • Calculation: The exact formula or math behind the metric, so you know precisely what is being computed.

  • Report Usage: A list of which reports use this data point, with links to navigate directly to those reports.

    • Select a row to show a list of reports that use that entry.

  • Trend Indicator: Whether an increase in this metric is a positive or negative signal, so you know what upward and downward arrows mean at a glance.

πŸ’‘ Tip: The trend indicator is especially helpful for metrics where direction is not obvious. For example, an increase in refunds would be flagged as a negative trend, while an increase in net sales would be positive.

Navigate from the Data Dictionary to a Report

  1. Select a metric to view its details.

  2. Under Report Usage, select any listed report.

  3. You will navigate directly to that report.

Great work! πŸ₯³ You now know how to use the data dictionary to understand metric definitions, calculations, and what trend indicators mean for your business.
