Universal Product Code (UPC) and Stock Keeping Unit (SKU) are both used to track inventory or products in different ways. Below are the differences between UPC and SKU.
Universal Product Code (UPC)
A code that is printed on the packaging of the product where the code remains the same throughout a product's life. UPCs are standardized and globally recognized, and are typically printed as barcodes that a barcode scanner can scan. For example, a lighter will have the same UPC every time you reorder it. Some cannabis items will have UPC listed on them (depending on your supplier/vendor). The UPC is managed on the Product level in Flowhub. To add a UPC to your Products:
Open the Menu in the upper left corner
Select Inventory
Select Products across the purple bar at the top
Search for the Product you would like to add a UPC to
Select Edit in the right panel
Scroll down and add the UPC
Save
Flowhub cannot print UPC barcodes for you.
Stock Keeping Unit (SKU)
A unique code specifically used for tracking inventory. SKUs are typically generated at the Dispensary and change per Package or Batch. Flowhub will automatically generate an SKU if one is not added when adding the Inventory. SKUs are managed on the Inventory level in Flowhub. To add a SKU:
Open the Menu in the upper left corner
Select Inventory
Select Inventory across the purple bar at the top
Search for the Inventory you would like to add a SKU to
Select Edit in the right panel
Scroll down to the bottom and add the SKU. If left blank our system will generate a SKU for you.
Save
Flowhub can print a SKU barcode. To print this SKU as a barcode:
Navigate to Inventory (or Cashier) and find the item you want to print a Barcode for.
Select "View Details" on the item to the right of the Post-Tax Price:
On the Details window that appears, select "Labels" at the top:
Select your Label Type, and the # of Copies you want to print, then select "Print Label" at the bottom to print the label.
Check Out with UPC or SKU
If an item has a UPC on the Product level and an SKU on the Inventory level, both barcodes (UPC or SKU) can be scanned to add items to the cart. For Example:
The UPC can be scanned and all Inventory built from that Product will show as options to add to the cart.
If the SKU is scanned, only the one Inventory item will populate to add to the cart.
