This article is a guide through the setup and formatting of your label printer. This article uses a Zebra printer as an example. If your label printer does not have an option to set your label size with these steps, we recommend you check the printer manual or the manufacturer's website for more information.

Hardware Setup:

  1. Plug your label printer into a power source.

  2. Ensure the label media is loaded properly: Down from the top and under the tabs.

  3. Ensure the label media is the correct type (2.25” x 1.25”, 2.25' x 4, etc).

  4. Press and hold the "Feed" button until the light flashes once, then release. One configuration label should print, and the light should remain solid. If not, there is a problem with the label media.

    • For LAN-connected printers note the IP address.

  5. Connect the printer to the computer using a USB cable.

Driver Setup

  1. Open system preferences and select "printers & scanners.

  2. Click the "+" button in the bottom left of the window and choose the default tab at the top.

    • Printer settings in system preferences.
  3. Select your zebra printer from the list.

    • USB printers will automatically show in this list.

    • For LAN printers select the "IP" tab and enter the IP address for your printer.

  4. From the "use" dropdown select "select software".

    • Select software dropdown menu in system preferences when adding a printer
  5. Type "zebra" into the search field and select "Zebra ZPL Label Printer".

    • Zebra is typed into the printer software search bar
  6. Select "Add".

    • The add button is outlined in red

    • Paste "cupsctl WebInterface=yes" and hit enter.

    • Now you are able to access http://localhost:631/printers/.
